WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING

"My name is Kate Hilgenberg and my son Bennett just had his last day of Drama Camp. To say he loved the week experience would be an understatement… but the amount of emoticons I would have to use to express how he has been talking about it would probably make me lose all credibility, so lets stick with LOVE!

I found out about Vital's camp at fair I attended to look into options for my 4 year old son for the summer. As I made my way through tables and tables of sports and outdoors camp and I was curious as to what a theatre could offer as a camp..especially for a four year old boy who thinks that soccer and Darth Vader sum up all that is good in life. Jessica, charming and energetic as always, spoke to me about all the activities and skills that Bennett would be exposed to at camp. I was sold, but I had one issue...Bennett was shy. Shy to the point where he won't even stand facing a person he doesn't know sometimes. Jessica convinced me that a shy boy would be no problem for her and I believed her. I signed him up and held my breath. Jessica was right! My husband did the first drop off and he said after 15 seconds of hiding in his coat he ran into the classroom and joined the other kids on the rug happily. When we picked him up he was excited, smiling and couldn't wait to tell me everything that he had done. He couldn't wait for the next day and double check with me that I had signed him up for the WHOLE week. Every day when I received Jessica's wonderful and detailed outlines of the day Bennett and I would read it together and he would be very proud to show off all he had learned. And no one in the audience today would have guessed that Bennett was shy! You will definitely be seeing Bennett again over the summer and I have already started spreading the word about this wonderful program you have. So thank you for having such a unique and educational program available for such young but capable children. Vital really made the whole experience special for Bennett and myself, from meeting her at the camp fair until this final performance. Kate Hilgenberg"

Q: What's the price of the Junior Performance Camp?
A: It is $375 per week.

Q: Are there any discounts?
A: Yes! Early Bird Discounts are available through December 15th for our February and April Camps and through April 15th for our June, July and August camps. There is also a twin discount of 10%. If you register twins, you pay $300 each.

Q: What do kids do at camp?
A: Campers study with professional teaching artists to learn vocal and creative movement skills, theatre games, music, and choreography. Every week we offer a different workshop in set, lighting and costume design. On Friday, the camp culminates in a performance which combines improvisation, theatre games and a production number from one of Vital's original musicals.

Q: What if my kid is shy?
A: Our teaching artists have a huge arsenal of techniques to get even the most shy child performing. We also have a 5-1 camper to counselor ratio so there are plenty of adults to give individualized attention.

Q: Does the 4-6 age range work?
A: Yes! We find that this specific age range works beautifully together. Any younger or older and it’s too large an age difference, but this range is just right!

Q: Is each day the same?
A: Everyday offers something new for your child while building on what they have learned throughout the week. Students start by learning skills and developing as performers, then go on to create an original performance and finish the week by rehearsing and shaping their play. Every Thursday, we welcome a professional designer to lead a workshop in set, costume, or lighting design.

Q: Can I register for more than one camp? Or is each week the same?
A: Each week features a different song from a different Vital production and also features a different design workshop. Your child can register for all camps and have a different experience each time.

Q: When do camps run?
A: Camps are from 9am to 12pm Monday-Friday with a culminating performance at 10:30am on Friday.

Q: Where are the camps?
A: The camps are at St. Michael's Church, 225 West 99th Street. This is a sunny, air- conditioned room with an adjoining child-sized bathroom.

Q: Why aren't the camps at Vital?
A: Our theatre space is often booked on the weekend and during school breaks with shows on our mainstage. We also find the space at St. Michael's to be more conducive to learning and creative exploration.

Q: Are there still spaces available? Should I sign up right away?
A: Yes! They should sign up right away because last year every single on of our camps sold out.

Q: What is the counselor/camper ratio?
A: 5 students to one counselor.

Q: What’s the refund policy?
A: Cancellation must be made three weeks in advance of camp in order to be fully refundable.

Q: Do you offer scholarships?
A: We have limited funds available for scholarships for families with financial need. If you are interested in a scholarship for your child, please e-mail camp@vitaltheatre.org with an explanation of why you would like a scholarship and someone from the camp staff will get back to you.

Q: What's the price of the Play in a Day?
A: The price is $150.

Q: Are there any discounts?
A: There are no discounts for Play in a Day.

Q: What do students do at Play in a Day?
A: Play in a Day is an intensive day long workshop that culminates in an afternoon performance. Campers learn vocal and creative movement skills, theatre games, music, and choreography with skilled performers and experienced teaching artists.

Q: What if my kid is shy?
A: Our teaching artists have a huge arsenal of techniques to get even the most shy child performing. We also have a 5-1 camper to counselor ratio so there are plenty of adults to give individualized attention.

Q: How are students divided?
A: We believe that students can be given a more developmentally appropriate experience when they are grouped with other kids their age. Play in a Day groups are split up into 4-6 year olds and 7-10 year olds, allowing for the best possible experience for all.

Q: Can I register for more than one camp or club? Or are they all the same?
A: Each of our programs are unique and we do our best to diversify our classes so that students can have a different experience each time. We draw from dozens of Vital Shows and hundreds of games and activities so we know there will always be something new and exciting for your child to experience.

Q: When does Play in a Day run?
A: There are 4 Play in a Day sessions scheduled. December 6, February 7, March 8, April 25. Each day goes from 10am to 3pm with a final performance at 2:40pm for parents and invited guests.

Q: Where is Play in a Day?
A: Play in a Days are at St. Michael's Church, 225 West 99th Street. Children perform in a sunny, air- conditioned room with an adjoining child-sized bathroom.

Q: Will Vital provide lunch for Play in a Day campers?
A: We will provide a pizza lunch from one of the local pizza places. If you do not want you child to have pizza, please feel free to provide them with a lunch. We will also provide snack and juice.

Q: Why isn't it at Vital?
A: Our theatre space is often booked on the weekend and during school breaks with shows on our mainstage. We also find the space at St. Michael's to be more conducive to learning and creative exploration.
